Surat’s diamond industry is back on tracks on Thursday after diamond workers protested for a 20% wage hike on Wednesday. “The dispute between Surat’s diamond unit owners and workers has been resolved today and the workers have gone back to their work,” president of Surat Diamond Association CP Vanani said to JCKIndia.
Earlier, in a meeting held between the Surat Diamond Association and the unit owners it was mutually decided to hike the wages of workers by 20%.
“Inflation is the reason that these workers are not able to afford to stay in the city and hence they wanted a wage hike,” said Vanani.
“Some of the units which denied the wage hike are Ashish Diamonds, Shreeji Diamonds, and Radhagopi Diamonds. These units denied the hike because the owner could not bear the cost keeping in mind their business model,” said Vanani.
Surat is know as a diamond hub which houses about 4,000 small and big diamond units, employing about 5 lakh workers.
