The inaugural meeting of the World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB) took place in Antwerp in July 1947 and is now recognized as the premiere World Diamond Congress.
The WFDB's intention was that the individual bourses would maintain their autonomy in all internal matters. But at the same time they agreed that decisions made at bourse level would comply with a general and dynamic legal framework which would be ratified by the WFDB general assembly, acting in its capacity as the supreme legislative organ of the federation.
International Diamond Manufacturers Association (IDMA) seeks to take a unified leadership role on all issues affecting the industry and convenes bi-annually, with the WFDB at the World Diamond Congress. The Congress includes a session of the general assemblies of both organizations, where joint resolutions are passed on current issues of concern. Now the World Diamond Congress compiles the annual general meeting of both the World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB) and International Diamond Manufacturers Association (IDMA).
